การใช้ can และ be able to

1. He can swim.

2. He is able to swim.

ทั้งสองประโยคนี้มีความหมายเหมือนกันเลย นั่นก็คือ "เขาสามารถว่ายน้ำเป็น"

พวกเราคงคุ้นเคยกับการใช้คำว่า "can" ที่แปลว่า "สามารถ" กันอยู่แล้วนะคะ

หากพูดถึงปัจจุบัน Present Simple รูปแบบประโยคก็คือ

ประธาน + can + กริยาช่อง 1

He can swim. เขาสามารถว่ายน้ำได้

หากพูดถึงอดีต Past Simple ให้เปลี่ยน can เป็น could

ประธาน + could + กริยาช่อง 1

He could swim. เขาสามารถว่ายน้ำได้ในอดีต

แต่หากเราจะพูดถึงประโยค tense อื่น can/could จะไม่สามารถใช้ได้

ไม่มี He will can swim.

ไม่มี He can have swum.

ส่วน He could have swum. ก็ความหมายจะเพี้ยนไปเป็น "เขาน่าจะว่ายน้ำ"

ดังนั้น เราจึงใช้ able (เอเบิล) มาแทนค่ะ

แต่ควรจำแบบยกเซ็ทไปเลยนะคะ เป็น to be + able to + v.1

to be = is/am/are/was/were/will be/ has been/ have been

เลือกใช้แล้วแต่ประธานและ tense ของประโยค

เช่น

He is able to swim. เขาสามารถว่ายน้ำเป็น

He was able to swim. เขาสามารถว่ายน้ำเป็นในอดีต

He will be able to swim. เขาจะสามารถว่ายน้ำเป็น

He has been able to swim. เขาสามารถว่ายน้ำเป็นมาตั้งแต่อดีตเรื่อยมา

ถ้าจะทำให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธ ก็เพียงแค่ใส่ not หลังกริยาช่วยตัวหลักของประโยค

He isn't able to swim.

I'm not able to speak to you right now.

John will not be able to go to school because he is ill.

The pilot has not been able to fly the plane.

ทำให้เป็นประโยคคำถามโดยการนำ verb หลักไว้หน้าประโยค

Is he able to swim?

Are you able to speak French?

Will Janie be able to sing for us tonight?

Have the pilot been able to fly the plane yet?
