เจอได้บ่อย เมื่อคำนามนั้นได้รับการกล่าวถึงมาแล้ว เช่น

Jim: A boy came to see you yesterday.

(หน้า boy ใช้ a เพราะกล่าวถึงเด็กชายคนหนึ่งเป็นครั้งแรก และไม่ได้เจาะจงว่าเป็นเด็กชายคนไหน

Lee: Do you know the boy's name?

(หน้า boy ใช้ the เพราะ Jim ได้มีการพูดถึงเด็กชายคนนี้ไปแล้ว Lee พูดครั้งต่อมา จึงใช้ the เท่ากับว่าเป็นการชี้เฉพาะลงไปว่า เราพูดถึงเด็กชายคนที่เพิ่งกล่าวถึงไปนะ ไม่ใช่คนไหนก็ได้

ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นชื่อเฉพาะบางคำ โดยปกติชื่อเฉพาะ ไม่ต้องมี a/an/the นำหน้า แต่ชื่อเฉพาะบางคำต้องมี the นำหน้า เช่น

- ชื่อคลอง (canal) เช่น the Suez Canal

- ชื่อแม่น้ำ ( river) เช่น the Thames, the Nile

- ชื่อทะเลและมหาสมุทร (sea and ocean) เช่น the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean

- ชื่ออ่าว ( gulf, bay) เช่น the Gulf of Mexico, the Persian Gulf

- ช่องแคบ (channel, straight) เช่น the English Channel, the Bering Straight

- แหลม/คาบสมุทร ( peninsula) เช่น the Indo-China Peninsula

- หมู่เกาะ ( groups of islands) เช่น the Philippines

- ทะเลทราย ( desert) เช่น the Sahara Desert

เทือกเขา ( chains of mountains) เช่น the Alps

- ประเทศที่มีชื่อเป็นพหูพจน์ เช่น the Netherlands

- ชื่อสถานที่บางแห่ง เช่น the Mandarin Oriental, the Grand Hotel

- ชื่อเฉพาะที่มี of เป็นส่วนประกอบ ดังนี้ noun + of + noun เช่น the Tower of London

- ชื่อเฉพาะที่มีคำคุณศัพท์นำหน้า ดังนี้ adjective + noun เช่น the National Gallery, the High Street
